CLEANING THE IAC MOTOR

By Todd Zabbia

This Project will help you clean your IAC or Idol Air control motor. If your ST stalls, runs rough, idles funny, This might be the fix for you. Please make sure there is no Check engine light on, Or a more serious problem.

I am rating this a 2 Wrench project. It is relatively simple and requires simple tools.

TOOLS :         1 7mm nut driver or ratchet and socket.

1 8 mm nut driver or ratchet and socket

4 qtips , or some type of swab or cleaning rag

Carburetor cleaner, or alcohol, or glass cleaner safe for rubber

Drop of  high temp oil. (3in1, motor oil) wd40 is NOT RECOMMENDED

First Disconnect the Negative Battery cable. Then Locate the Throttle Cover. It is the plastic cover that has 4.0 molded into it.

Next using the 7MM remove the 3 screws holding the throttle cover on. This will expose the IAC motor.  Next Unplug the IAC connector And then using the 8MM remove the 2 bolts holding the IAC on.

The gasket is molded into the intake manifold, so just be carefull not to damage it. Also there will be to holes opened up. BE CAREFULL not to drop anything in there!!!

This is the gasket and the bypass hole. Clean with the cleaner on a rag or swab.

Take the valve and look inside it. There is an empty chamber and the one with the valve in it.  Clean both sides using the cleaner and swabs or rags. After you are satisfied you have it clean enough, Place your finger in the valve side and actually using your finger tip, Open the valve a little and Place a drop or 2 of lubricant between the valve and where  it seats to. (YELLOW ARROW )

DIRTY VALVE                       Clean Valve

MY truck only has 9000 miles on it, So the valve was not that dirty, BUT you can see the difference!!!.

Reassemble in reverse order being careful NOT TO OVER TIGHTEN the bolts. Also I would recommend a Cris cross tightening of the IAC motors 2 bolts. This means Slightly snug one, then snug the other, then tighten 1 then tighten the other.

Plug the connector back on, Put the battery cable back on, and start the truck.

Let idle for a couple of minuets and then take for a drive.. ENJOY!!!
